CENTRIPETAL
The centriPETAL is an interactive prototype made for Possible Mediums (http://www.possiblemediums.com/) that experiments with two types of motion: a hinging vertical-to-horizontal movement, and an interior rotary movement that is performative.
When approached, the enclosure separates into equal sections exposing an interior of softer materials. A secondary set of objects (akin to shepherd's flute or kaval) spin and fold outward to create sound. After playing an arrangement of E4, F4, G4, they slowly stop and close.
This centriPETAL device is part of a longer investigation into hinged dissections and movement in human environments. The idea of isolating motion into catalogued affects as well as extended performativity such as sound, is considered part of an augmented architecture for Ibañez Kim studio.
Many thanks to Kelly Blair, Kristy Balliet, Adam Fure, and Kyle Miller, organizers of Possible Mediums.
Specifically designed for the Music of the Planets performance with Grace Kelly Jazz, this object has three rotating tubes that emit E3, F3, and G3 at one speed. The higher speed produces the next octave. Individual valves open and close each tube so that sound can be shut on or off.
An outer layer of three shells open when someone approaches, and the tubes begin to rotate. The shells then shut.
